What is DPI?

DPI means Dots Per Inch. Many applications also use PPI, or Pixels Per Inch, for digital images. For everyday image files, DPI and PPI are often used interchangeably when estimating print size.

DPI becomes important when printing. On a screen, the image is displayed from its pixel dimensions and the layout size chosen by the browser, app or device.

Why check DPI?

Check DPI when preparing photos for print, books, brochures, posters, business cards, client artwork or print shop delivery. It helps estimate how large an image can print at a chosen pixel density.

Large pixel dimensions matter more than DPI alone. A small image marked as 300 DPI may still be too small for a large poster, while a high-resolution photo can print well even if the embedded DPI field is missing or set to a default value.
