What is image format conversion?

Image format conversion changes how an image is encoded. The visible picture can keep the same width and height while the file changes from PNG to JPG, JPG to WebP, WebP to PNG or another supported combination. This is useful when a website, document, marketplace or app accepts only certain file types.

Conversion is different from resizing and cropping. Resizing changes pixel dimensions, cropping changes the frame, and format conversion changes the file container and encoding. In many image workflows, you may use Crop Image first, then Resize Image, and finally convert or compress the export.

When should you convert an image?

Convert an image when the current format does not match the place where the file will be used. PNG can be useful for transparency and screenshots. JPG is widely compatible for photos. WebP is a modern format for efficient web delivery.

PNG to JPG

Use JPG for broad compatibility and smaller photo files.

JPG to PNG

Use PNG for editing workflows that need a crisp raster file.

PNG or JPG to WebP

Use WebP for modern websites and optimized image delivery.

Supported image formats

The converter supports PNG, JPEG/JPG and WebP input in modern browsers. Output options include JPEG, PNG and WebP. Browser support can vary for older devices, especially for WebP export.

Image quality considerations

PNG export is usually best for sharp graphics, screenshots and transparency. JPEG and WebP can use lossy compression, which may reduce file size but can slightly change fine details. Converting to JPEG removes transparency because JPEG does not support it.

Privacy

The image is decoded and converted in your browser with Canvas. MetricLab does not upload the file, send it to an external image service or store it on a server. The original preview and converted result are temporary browser object URLs for the current session.
